ArcMap join vs relate

Table relate vs table join for tables in ArcGIS While join appends attributes to the end of a table, relate creates a temporary table for all the matching records. All tables link with each other based on cardinality (1-1, 1-M and M-N). Both join and relate work on the principle of having matching unique IDs in two tables When you save a map containing joins and relates, ArcMap saves the definition of how the two attribute tables are linked rather than saving the linked data itself. The next time you open your map, ArcMap reestablishes the relationship (whether a join or relate) between the tables by reading the tables from the database. In this way, any changes to the source tables that have taken place since they were last viewed on the map are automatically included and reflected on the map In comparing relationship classes, joins, and relates, the basics are that relationship classes help ensure referential integrity, relates are on-the fly relationships and can be used to improve editing, and joins are best suited for labeling and symbology. A relate would be significantly different than your current set up. You would select the record in your spatial table, and the matching records would be selected in the non-spatial table, but they would still appear as two separate tables, unlike a join. This may impact your workflows. A query table, however, would function much like the original table, (although it would not support editing). The query table would even show the features if you include the SHAPE@ field Durch das Erstellen von Beziehungen zwischen Tabellen, insbesondere zwischen geographischen und nicht räumlichen Daten, können Sie die Geographie besser verstehen und leichter analysieren In ArcMap, this relationship is often implied based upon which tables are chosen to be joined and the order in which they are joined - that is to say the relationship is determined by ArcMap based upon which table goes first in the table join tool and which table goes second. Relates are bi-directional since the fields are not appended, the software just shows the related field in each table. If your layer or table has a relate, it is removed once data is joined to it. If you perform a relate on a joined layer or table, the relate is removed when the join is removed. As a general rule of thumb, it is best to create your joins and then add your relates

For example, you might have a layer containing point features that supply the location of cities and a separate table with characteristics about those cities, such as population or spending habits. Merging in ArcGIS takes the features of two or more layers (or two rasters) and creates one layer. An example of a situation where a merge would be appropriate could be if you have separate point layers representing hospital locations for Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, and you want one layer of hospitals in New England.
